About Uganda
On the shore of Lake Victoria, Uganda lies across the breathtaking East African equator. Over half of the nation's population is under the age of 16 and it remains one of the world's poorer countries. War, poverty, and a lack of developed infrastructure, healthcare, training and educational resources mean that vulnerable children are at risk of missing out on an effective education.
- Imagine learning in a class of over 100
- The blackboard so old, it is full of holes
- You have no balls for the field or displays in the classrooms, just bare brick
- Now imagine that some of the children around you have haunting memories of war and have witnessed cruel death of family and friends.
Nevertheless, Uganda's children are amazingly creative, resourceful and motivated. Uganda's teachers care deeply about improving the quality of education for their pupils. Their wide experiences and diverse culture ensures they have much to teach us. A partnership with a UK school can support developments whilst encouraging a positive image of African life.
Uganda presents an interesting and appropriate country to link with UK schools. Children are taught in English, simplifying communication, and in 1996 the Government eliminated fees in an attempt to achieve universal primary education. UK children will, therefore, be put in touch with 'normal' Ugandan children, rather than only the privileged who are able to pay school fees.
